Firearms
As you are familiar with your own rifles back home, we advise you to bring them along.
Should you have the need to rent a firearm for your safari, we offer a firearm rental service at $40 per day inclusive of ammunition.
Any calibre .222 to .270 is adequate for smaller game, but .270 and bigger is advisable for larger antelope species. For all dangerous animal hunts the minimum legal requirement is a 375 or larger calibre. A shotgun is recommended for occasional bird hunting. It is important to note that only one firearm of a specific calibre will be allowed per person. Only persons over the age of 21 are allowed to bring firearms into the country. Such persons under 21 must be accompanied by an elder. It is imperative that you register your firearm at your port of departure before entering the Republic of South Africa. All necessary forms and procedures will be forwarded to you well in advance, prior to departure.
It is advisable that all firearms be transported in a hardcase. Soft cases will be provided by your professional hunter. Ammunition is to be transported in a seperate container (enquire at travel agent as to airline regulations). About 80 rounds of rifle ammunition is sufficient for regular safaris.
